The Story

The Marine Bar holds a unique place in Whitehead’s history. For more than 130 years, it has been a place where people come together — for conversation, music, and good company.

More than just a pub, it has become a meeting place for locals and visitors alike. From quiet chats to lively nights of music, the Marine has always been at the heart of the town’s social life.

A PUB WITH HISTORY

In 1891, the Marine Bar became the first premises in Whitehead to receive a liquor licence. At a time when many local hotels were temperance establishments that did not serve alcohol, the Marine played a unique role in the town’s early development as a seaside destination.

Since then, it has served the community continuously — making it one of the longest-standing licensed premises in the area.

A COMMUNITY “THIRD PLACE”

Sociologists describe welcoming gathering spaces outside home and work as “third places.”

For generations, the Marine Bar has been exactly that — a place where people meet friends, share stories, and enjoy music together.

Live sessions, open mic nights, and regular performances have made it an important cultural space in Whitehead, where musicians, singers, and storytellers continue a long-standing tradition.

THE MARINE TODAY

Today, the Marine Bar is known for its welcoming atmosphere, live music, and strong sense of community.

From traditional sessions and open mic nights to visiting bands and local events, there is always something happening.

Tucked away in Marine Lane, just beside Belfast Lough, it’s a place where you can hear the waves outside while music and conversation carry on inside.

COMMUNITY & MEMORIES
